I recently received my beloved alma mater Hunter College's yearly alumni magazine
Adorned with stunning visuals and eloquently crafted stories of accomplished graduates, it was a testament to the dedication and hard work put forth by the college to showcase its alumni community. Immediately, I opened it, scanning for classmates and reading in-depth interviews with some fascinating graduates I'd never heard of. One was a paramedic-turned-MD who narrowly escaped death in a carbomb during one of his humanitarian efforts overseas, another became a New York State senator, another became a theater critic for the New Yorker...these were stunning people with amazing stories to tell.
And then I lost it.
With two bulldogs, a toddler, and another baby on the way, life moves fast in the Clark household. I'm assuming that beautiful glossy magazine was mistaken for, and subsquently became, what is known colloquially as trash. This left me wondering how many thousands upon thousands of my fellow alumni were sent this beautiful publication, only for it to be lost in the mail (if there's one thing addresses tend to do, its that they change), lost in the house, or lost in some other, even more mundane way. That's thousands and thousands of dollars spent in scheduling, interviewing, writing, re-writing, printing, mailing... not to mention that Hunter is a relatively small college. How many thousands of other Universities are sending out these publications every year? And even if these magazines were given a place of honor in their target alumni's bookshelf, surely there's a better, more permament way to tell these alumni's stories?
